NJ dentist Avi Weisfogel transforms practice of sleep medicine

Dr. Avi Weisfogel was always a high achiever. After graduating high school, he knew that he wanted to do something that would both help the world and leave his mark on it. He applied to and was accepted at the New York University School of Dentistry. Upon graduating in 1998, he founded his first dental practice, Old Bridge Dental.Over the next 10 years, Dr. Avi Weisfogel built his practice into one of the most formidable dental offices in Central New Jersey. But all the while, he spent his off hours continuing to study medicine. He was particularly interested in under diagnosed diseases which could be detected and, perhaps, even treated by dentists. He knew that many diseases with etiologies in the head and neck area, such as esophageal cancer, gave the patient a vastly higher chance of survival when they were detected in the earliest stages, when treatment was far more likely to be effective.

He set out intensively researching all diseases which would benefit from early detection and against which dentists could serve as a treatment vanguard, catching them early and often. It was during this period that Dr. Weisfogel became aware of the deadly disease called sleep apnea.Sleep apnea, while sounding fairly innocuous, is one of the most under diagnosed of all the killer diseases in the United States. Contrary to what its name implies, it’s much more than merely a sleep disorder. Sleep apnea is strongly correlated with just about every major cause of mortality, including heart attack, stroke, diabetes and even some types of cancers. What’s worse, in over 95% of cases, the disease goes undiagnosed. Dr. Weisfogel thought he could do something about that.

In 2011, he founded Dental Sleep Masters, an organization dedicated to seminars and training sessions to teach dentists how to recognize and treat the insidious killer sleep apnea. Over the last few years, Dental Sleep Masters has proven wildly successful. So great has been its success that many of the dentists who have completed the training program have abandoned their traditional practices in favor of the more lucrative sleep dentistry. With this achievement, Dr. Weisfogel has forever transformed the way that both sleep medicine and dentistry are practiced.

Dr Avi Weisfogel Is Looking To Help Children By Funding Operation Smile

Dr. Avi Weisfogel has served the New Brunswick, NJ community for many years as a dentist and sleep professional, and now he’s helping young children overseas through Operation Smile. This is a non-profit group headed by Dr. William Magee who has used fundraising to help purchase surgical equipment and hire medical professionals to treat children who have lip clefts or other mouth deformities. Weisfogel has donated some of his own funds to this organization, but he’s also launched a GoFundMe page so that others can donate to Operation Smile. Weisfogel has enjoyed seeing people in America with healthy smiles during his time as a dentist, and how he wants to see children in third world countries also have the same opportunity.

Dr. Weisfogel spent 15 years as a regular dentist before entering the sleep treatment profession. He had some background in the medical field growing up as his father was a cardiologist, and he aspired to follow a similar path. He attended Rutgers University where he studied biology and psychology, and then he decided to pursue dentistry and got his DDS from the College of Dentistry at New York University in 1997. Weisfogel opened several offices around New Brunswick before establishing Old Bridge Dental Care in 1999, the office from which he has spent most of his career practicing dentistry.

Weisfogel was quite successful as a dentist, earning high recommendations from his patients and even being awarded Best Dentist in the community. But he himself didn’t feel too passionate about it, and he wanted to do something more besides regular dentistry. He became interested in sleep studies after noticing patients coming to his office that weren’t sleeping very well, so he started exploring the science and research of sleep. He first founded Healthy Heart Sleep in 2010, and then Owner Unlimited Sleep Patient in 2012 as a start to helping dentists treat patients with sleep disorders. In 2014 he founded Dental Sleep Masters to explore the options of mouth appliances that could help patients with large necks or inhibited airways achieve better sleep results. Weisfogel works full time as an expert consultant in the field, but he also makes time for family on the side.
